Browsing through, I found this article on Marseilles Cloth.
In France, this kind of needlework was, and is still, known as Boutis. I am very fond of this and even teach it. It takes a long time to do and much patience. I learned to do Boutis in France.

Boutis faded away in the 19th century but has had a rebirth and is quite widespread now.
