I made this dress out of blue chiffon for my friend’s 16th birthday. It is modeled after the dress Liesl wears when singing the famous song “16 Going On 17” in the movie “The Sound of Music.” I used the Edelweiss pattern.
It was my first time working with chiffon. Having never worked with chiffon before, it was quite a challenge, but completely worth the work. I made the bias and bows on the front of the dress from chiffon. The dress fastens with a zipper and a hook-and-eye in the back. It has a polyester dress lining, and I also made a cotton tank top to go under the bodice. Me being me, I had put a lot of the work of till the very end, and the week of the party found me frantically trying to finsh the dress. Thankfully I finished it no problem.
Overall it was completely worth the stress to see it finished and looking beautiful on my beautiful friend. Not having ever had a sewing treacher and being a mainly self taught seamstress I was slightly flabbergasted that I was able to pull this project off. It is way above the level of anything I have ever done before. The jump from simple cotton dresses to a chiffon detailed dress was a bit large and challenging, but I am sooooo thankful I made the jump because I now know that I am capable of trying new, bigger and more complicated sewing projects!
