The Design

I have been living in Paris for over 20 years now. From the bathroom window of our very first flat we could see the Eiffel Tower, which is at the same time romantic and hilarious, very much like Paris herself. My entry is inspired by the Eiffel Tower and the city of Paris.

Outer boning channels and the flossing show the structure of the corset in the same way the metallic structure of the Tower is visible. The also represent the duality that defines both corsets and the Eiffel Tower: rigid steel that creates light and flexible structures.

The colour pallet is inspired by Paris as the main colour in Paris is grey. Everything is a different shade of grey and somehow Paris is the most beautiful in the rain.

The Construction

The pattern used is Erin overbust by AraneaBlack with a slight alteration of the bust. It is a single layer spotted coutil corset except for centre front and centre back panels that are two layers. Panels were assembled wrong sides facing each other and the seam allowances stitched down and trimmed, then covered by the external boning channels. The 3rd panel has a gore inserted which was the main technical difficulty in constructing this corset.

The corset closes in the front by a 5-pin split busk. I also added a modesty plaquette in the front. There is a total of 12 spiral steel bones and two flat steel bones per side. Boning channels and bias binding are made from the same coutil as the corset.

The corset is embellished with flossing and lace.

What was it like to compete this year? What would you say to someone who is on the fence about entering next year?

It was scary and I never thought it would be finished on time but totally worth the effort.

Really neat stitching and elegant construction, I smiled as well, because I always remember Paris as grey too - so the grey coutil is just right!

I love the shaping of those panels! And the lace at the top is just the most wonderfully subtle bit of contrast. :)

Oh, it is beautiful! The gores are inserted so neatly and I love the flossing.
And wow, binding the corset with coutil is not easy, isn't it? I imagine this s quite a challenge.
You did a wonderful job, it looks gorgeous!

The corset is a lovely shape on you and the stitching in your close ups is so neat. I particularly like the flossing, very subtle but a nice nod to the eiffel tower.

Clean, simple, perfectly executed with attention to detail - Eifell tower must be feeling very flattered to stand as inspiration to this lovely corset!
