The Design

The Frederick C. Robie House is a U.S. National Historic Landmark on the Campus of the University of Chicago in Illinois, USA. The home was designed in 1908 by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and is renowned as the greatest example of Prairie School, the first architectural style considered uniquely American. The steel beams in the 9,062 square foot home carry most of the building's weight to piers at the east and west ends. As a result, the exterior walls have little structural function, and thus are filled with doors and windows containing 174 art glass panels in 29 designs. Lora Robie, Frederick's wife, may have worn this early Edwardian style of corset when her new home was being designed and built. The corset is reflective of one of the art glass windows in the Robie House and, like the house, is as much about beauty as it is about foundation and structure.

The Construction

This is the fourth corset I have constructed. I started with a base from a commercial pattern by Truly Victorian. The strength layer is pure white corset coutil with a pure white embroidered organza overlay to simulate glass. To reflect the art-glass Wright window (small replica shown in the photos), the grommet panels are autumn gold silk and the busk, lacing, grommets, and edge bias binding are midnight black. The garters are made from the same gold silk as the corset back panels. Techniques that I've used for the first time include hip and bust gores and internal boning channels. I also made hip and bust pads from the gold silk which are positioned under the corset creating the elegant Early Edwardian silhouette. Resources came from the Foundations Revealed Member's articles and videos. I studied or used three flossing design articles including Flossing Design Library - The Symington Collection by Cathy Hay, and mentor live video sessions for Edge Finishes April 2018, External Boning Channels July 2018, and Padding the Figure September 2018.

What was it like to compete this year? What would you say to someone who is on the fence about entering next year?

The journey of participating in the Competition is filled with ups and downs, doubts and confidence, fear and joy. There is truly no reason not to participate and the learning is so worth putting yourself out there. Just do it!

It is so nice to see a historically inspired corset in the competition - and those ruffled garters are perfect! Lovely work.

Thank you, galadriel! Historical is my love!

Beautiful! I love the details, and I bet it's even more amazing in person!

Thank you, certainsundries ! It was difficult to capture the glimmer and contrast in photos but the clean line is part of the Wright trademark and it was my hope to follow that inspiration.

Most elegant and the original window is easy to see as the influence too, I love the flash of gold just at the back and the bold black flossing particularly.

Thank you, jema! I think the limited colors is what makes the art glass window so striking. But I have a surprise coming!

The golden back panels and garter straps are such an interesting idea! I think it adds that extra little something to the already beautiful black and white design. Also love the graphic black flossing and black busk paired with a historical pattern!

Thank you, royalblack! Like the art glass window there is such stark contrast. Wait until you see what I have going on! *devious smile*

What perfect inspiration!! I love how you translated the gold panels onto the back of the corset so that you could add those perfect lacing crosses. This is weirdly very satisfying. :)

Thank you, bernadettebanne r! The gold is so unexpected, isn't it?

Thank you, lyrisdesign! Since I now have time as my Victorian weekend teaching and social event is over, I'm going to work on the flossing some more. It adds so much!

I really like those white, gold, black color palette, it really shows your inspiration, and looks so luxurious. I love the fact that you did a historical piece, as it has such a special silhouette and details. Such a gorgeous piece! <3

Thank you, damaris! I know historical pieces aren't common for corset entries, but I loved learning the tips and tricks of this era and the silhouette created.

Very nice, I can see the elements of the stained glass at the Robie House interpreted in the lacing and your color palette. Very elegant!

I see the lines of the window echoed in the structure of the lacing, beautiful work !

Thank you, greenmartha!!

I like how the gold panels and lacing mimics the design on the window panes. Your hip and bust gore's are inserted really nicely too.

Thank you, kirstymitchell! I worked very hard on the hip and bust gores as they were my first time attempting this and were quite challenging!

Thank you, marloes dadswell! The symmetry is part of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural beauty and I tried to capture that.

Let me start with complimenting your flossing (I'm not yet that far with my corset but already studying and learning from others' work). Your design translated the inspiration very nicely - and I love the back panels in particular.
