The Design

I was inspired by the "Votivkirche" in Vienna, where I lived for a few years, and also a beautiful painted picture of an underwater palace. So I combined these two main inspirations and created this "Sunken Cathedral" corset. The main part are the big gothic windows, which narrow down towards the hips and end end in pillars standing on a tiled floor. I wanted to give the impression that the viewer is standing at chequered floor, watching towards the windows.

Attached at the hip is a skeleton of an overgrown cloister, which adds more dimension and a surreal shape to the silhouette of the design.

The Construction

The base of the corset is made of seven panels each side. The two front ones are of blue dupioni silk fused with coutil. I only had 30cm of it, but I was so inspired by the color, that I decided to use it nonetheless. Therefore I had to use satin at the backpanel, but added a little remaining fabric under the application at the back. The rest is made with black mesh, which I didn't used before. It was quite interesting to work with, as I also had to do some external boning cases, also a first to me.

The front is decorated with a hand-cut gothic window appliqué (sadly I have no lasercutter available). I also added machine-stitched glass frames at the inner part of the appliqué. At the front part I had to add all the boning cases by hand, as I didn't want to sew through all of the stitching and the appliqués.

The front part is embroidered with a lot of pearls and beads for details and the floor is made of Swarovski crystals.

The hips are decorated with two layers of lace for a underwatery structure, and embroidered with glass pearls to imitate little water droplets.

The two hip pieces are made of black worbla and millinery wire.

The pattern was very curvy and I struggled a bit with making it as neat as I wanted to, but it turned out okay and I learned a lot working with the mix of different materials.

What was it like to compete this year? What would you say to someone who is on the fence about entering next year?

With only three weeks of time due to my day job and a commission I was working on until the end of December, time was my main problem. I wasn't sure I would even make it in time. But I learned a lot, pushed myself and had so much fun working on a personal project again!

That blue is so perfect! I LOVE this bust design, the window motif is perfect and so beautiful! Masterful work. Hats off to you. :)
Gravatar
Oh thank you so much <3 Yes I love this blue shade so much, sadly I had only 30cm of this silk, enough for only the front panel and the gore... but that is why I decided to try out mesh for the first time ;)
Gravatar
My heart did that, too!

Holy crap, I love the bust shaping-- I wish I could come study with you! This is stunning, Damaris!

Thank you so much, I achieved the bust shape with a bust gore. Barbaras "Divina" Corset has those and this really intrigued me as you can do a really dramatic shape using different fabrics :D
You are always welcome :)

Absolutely stunning, and well done on those hand cut appliques - I was sure they were laser cut! Ive always shied away from designs like this because of not having a laser cutter, maybe I'll have a go after all.
Gravatar
Thank you so much <3
Yes give it a go, I haven't a laser cutter anywhere nearby, too. It is a bit of work and the edges aren't sealed that way, but the PU leather didn't fray so it was all worth it. I guess I would even had failed doing it with the laser cutter. I did make a pattern first, but as the bust is quite curvy I had to make several pieces which I added one by one always adjusting it. I had a better overview over the whole thing doing it by hand :)

I've already told you and I'll repeat, this is insane. Nothing to add, nothing to remove, everything is on its place, if we needed an illustration of word "perfection", here it is. And only three weeks, damn, Damaris, how?
Gravatar
<3 oh thank you so so so so much! Don't know what else to say, to your kind words... <3
Exactly how I managed it in that time, I don't know. But as I was having so much joy with it, as it was finally a piece I made just for the fun of it, the nightshifts weren't hard at all... but I slept very well and a lot after finishing it ;)

Thank you so much Kitty, you don't know how much that means to me! <3 Barbara is a sewing goddess and will always be an inspiring role model for me, and I learned and still learn a great deal from her!

You can be so proud of yourself, Damaris!

Thank you, Babara, you know it means a lot to me coming from you <3 And I am a little bit proud, if I am honest ;) And thanks for your advice, too <3 It has its flaws though (this mesh was a bit of a bitch in the curved front seams and my sewing machine had some serious problems with it) but it is okay, and I kind of don't mind (for the first time) I like it anyway! ;)

Spectacular workmanship - especially on all those hand cut and appliqued details, and I love the story that shines through the corset too, the seaweed lace and the hip arches are divine, the more I look the more I see, what a wonderful corset :)

This is absolutely stunning! It's almost too much to take in at once - with all the different details in the different areas!
The hips! The bust! But I think my favourite part is the delicate arch at the top of the back.... wow!

Gravatar
Thank you Catherine, it means a lot to me, I know what you mean, I thought about the "too much" by myself too, but it was like a rush when I started beading the front ;D
Gravatar
sandrachirico
This is INCREDIBLE!!! I love eveything about it. The transparency, the appliqué, the bead work detail, just WOW!!!
Gravatar
Thank you so so much Sandra, I loved to play with the transparency and the applications, it was my first time using those techniques on a corset and I guess it wasn't the last time! ;)

Ok yes, the corset is lovely, but I'm having a special moment over that coral texture with the lace bits on the hips! It has such a wonderful effect in the more distant pictures, against the whole shape of the corset!
Gravatar
Oh thank you Bernadette, I really was surprised how well this seaweed effect with the layered laces was working. It somehow is my favorite part of the corset too ;)
Gravatar
I love this piece ! Intricate and yet well-balanced, you truly see the story behind it. Amazing.
Gravatar
Thank you so much! I am glad you see the inspiration and story behind it! <3

Not very many people are going to have access to a laser cutter so I just thought pieces like this aren't achievable for me. I'm in awe that you cut that by hand. So precise and clean and the stitching is just flawless. There is so much to look at in the silhouette and decoration. It's stunning, you must be delighted. Also a great example of how to use small pieces of fabric in a thrifty way.
Gravatar
Oh thank you! And it makes me very happy if it inspires someone to try something new! Go for it, it isn't complicated and you can do many small pieces which are much more easier to attach and adjust to all the curves of a corset or garment in general. The window application isn't one piece either, I think it were five or seven in the front ;)
Gravatar
Your corset is just spactacular! I'm sure everyone admires it)) The design and the details! Oh god! I'm in love with them)))

Thank you so much my dear! <3
