The Design

With Maleficent receiving a lot more attention from the recent live action remakes, I absolutely wanted to try to take my spin at an alternative outfit for this remarkable Disney Villain (Sleeping Beauty (1959) y'all!).

Maleficent is so petty that she will curse a baby after not being invited to a party. She also carries a massive grudge for 18 years. Relatable? You bet. Which is why I wanted to renew her green-skinned severe and very covered look with something more stylish and sexy. The corset itself is decorated with a black rose and thorny lace and embellished with purple stones as a nod to her animation getup. I really wanted to preserve parts of her original silhouette, but I also wanted the waist and bust to be accentuated and very visible.

This is a rebirth of the villainess in the wave of remakes and retellings and twists on classic tales of good vs. evil. She may still be a petty cruel fae in my adaption, but I wanted her looks to be decieving.

The Construction

It's my first time creating a design from my own imagination, rather than creating something as close to a reference as possible (traditional cosplay). Stepping out of my comfort zone was both exciting, but also absolutely nerve wracking and I second guessed my design choices every step of the way. This is the third corset I've ever sewn, and it's my first time using coutil and proper boning. I've also never fitted or changed the shape of a corset pattern before, but I found Cathy Hay's article, Draft Your Own Corset, super helpful in regards to figuring out where to give or take in the pattern, and the technicality behind creating these garments.

I reworked the corset pattern through three mock ups, where I adjusted the panels a little bit each time, especially in the waist area. I also elongated the front and back.

I am so proud of myself for taking a step into the intimidating world of corset making, and I definitely learned a lot throughout this entire process - especially from my mistakes!

Materials Used

I was given a beautiful piece of cotton-backed corsetry satin by my friend, Kitty, which was used for the corset (with words of encouragement from her to enter this competition). The lace was bought, but many of the purple pearls and stones were ones I had lying around. I bought some extra glass crystals for embellishment, but the seller neglected to tell me they only had half in stock of what I'd bought (sigh). I appreciate the play of colours in the different shades of purple, but I envisioned something even more extraordinary; sometimes you have to use what you can get in time. There is plastic coated steel boning in the front and in the back, and spiral wire corset boning in the rest.

The collared jacket with the bat sleeves is made entirely of recycled or leftover fabrics. The leather, which is the base of the jacket, was an upcycled old leather couch, and the sleeves and purple lining were fabrics I had lying around. I would have preferred a more "expensive" looking fabric for the lining and collar, but I also knew I probably would have had this purple fabric lying around forever if I didn't use it. I made the helmet and horns in high density craft foam.

What was it like to compete this year? What would you say to someone who is on the fence about entering next year?

Having a deadline and a set goal for finishing a costume or learning a new skill is something that really motivates me. If you feel the same way, then challenge yourself and see if you can exceed what you know, thought you knew and what you could create. It’s also fun to reflect and explain what you did and why. I already want to make something better for next year!

That corset design is so intoxicating! Those low hanging hip panels add so much drama; slightly sinister, but maybe not? I'm almost irrevocably drawn to learn more about this character.
