This is excellent stuff, Katherine. The documentary evidence from the Royal Navy and your analysis of the captains' attire from Johnson are particularly useful. I'm glad you included the Whydah artifacts- the last time I was at their museum in Provincetown I spent about a half an hour bent over a small case holding textile scraps recovered from the wreck. I work in Salem, Mass., a city with a strong maritime heritage, and while I haven't had cause to costume a pirate or honest seaman yet, I'm sure the opportunity will arise- at which point I will turn to your articles. Thanks for posting!
