Really informative, and I appreciate the number of links and references you've provided. My next corset is going to be something like yellow and black!! Thanks for the inspiration ...

Makes the modern knicker draw look rather feeble doesn't it. Thanks so much for this, lovely article.

In the underwear list for India, it says, "•Two pairs of corsets, with extra cases to wash; one pair of evening corsets, with case".
What is a case?

Valarie,
That's a great question, and I don't know the answer to it, but I'll see if I can find out.

I put items that can damage easily in pillow cases in the wash, could it be washable corsets in cases made specially to wash them so that they wouldn't damage?

Marion, Thanks for adding that about the Silverado Pattern being the closest to the corsets of that period. I needed to make one for a photo shoot so I modified JoAnn's pattern. I Modified the three pattern in the front of the corset to make them straight and I made the gores straight and lengthened them. There are a couple things I might do different if I did it again but it did work fairly well. Anyone can e-mail me if they would like to get more info or see a picture. Lynn
